Clinical class in prosthodontics was held at
Ahead Academy, New Delhi centre. Veneers were discussed in detail. Veneers are
thin pieces of porcelain used to recreate the natural look of teeth. They also
provide strength to the tooth. It is used in teeth with poor colour, shape and
contours. Veneers are a good choice for fractured teeth, gaps between teeth and
bite related problems smile designing was elaborated. A smile makeover is the
process of improving the appearance of the smile through one or more cosmetic
dentistry procedures like veneers, composite bonding, implants and whitening.
Zirconia crowns and their properties were taught to the students. The trade
names and market price of crowns and resin cements were told to the students.
The technique was then demonstrated to the students in detail.
A 20 year old boy, Mohit met with an accident at
the age of 13 years in which his upper front teeth got fractured. He underwent
treatment from a local clinic and got two crowns placed. Now the patient came
with a complaint of fractured crown and pain in upper front teeth. On
examination, there was a sinus and pus formation in the lateral incisor. On
radiographic examination, there was faulty root canal treatment. There was presence
of blunder buss canals. The
'blunderbuss' anatomy of the canal often poses an array of difficulties to
achieve adequate obturation for successful endodontic therapy. Customization of
the gutta-percha to mold to the shape of the canal has been attempted, but
often results in apical extrusion and subsequent trauma to the periodontal
tissues, in the absence of an apical barrier. Apicoectomy procedure was advised
as a required treatment. Sometimes a tooth that has had endodontic treatment (a
root canal procedure) fails. This can happen soon after the procedure or many
years following it. The failure of an endodontically treated tooth can lead to
pain, swelling or both. A patient in this situation has several alternatives:
non-surgical endodontic re-treatment (basically, the “re-doing” of a root canal
procedure); tooth extraction and replacement with a bridge or implant; or an
apicoectomy. An apicoectomy can help retain the tooth for an indefinite time
period. It is a minor surgical procedure with many advantages over tooth
extraction followed by an implant. During apicoectomy, two cysts were found in
upper front teeth. The apex of the root was cut and further treatment was
carried out. The tooth was finally restored with a cement The patient is now
happy and satisfied with the treatment.
Clinical class in periodontics was held as part
of clinical certificate course in Periodontics. The topic of discussion was “Flap
surgery and Periodontal Pocket”. Pocket management was explained to the
students. Different types of flaps were elaborated. Gingival flap surgery is a
type of gum procedure, where the gums are separated from teeth temporarily and
folded back.
